Local female artists to take the stage at Curvilicious

Calgary based theatre company Urban Curvz Theatre works with local female artists in various genres from acting, singing, play directing and playwrights.

Urban Curvz is holding its third annual fundraising event, Curvilicious, on March 15. Curvilicious showcases the talent of local female artists while raising funds for Urban Curvz Theatre.

“What the money goes to is paying our women artists and making sure that our mandate of helping artists make a living is met," said Kathryn Waters, artistic director designate of Urban Curvz Theatre. "We also use that money to pay for venue costs and production expenses such as costumes. The money goes towards artistic work.”

At this year’s Curvilicious, there will be a silent auction accompanied with a live performance. Waters says some of the items featured in the auction are Yoga Passage memberships, tickets for Alberta Theatre Projects and a tea tasting session.

Michelle Kneale, artistic associate and director of dramaturgy for Urban Curvz, describes the live performance as cabaret style.

“The performers are all women, some emerging but mostly established performers from Calgary who have something they’ve wanted to contribute to Calgary audiences," Kneale said. “It may be a monologue or a scene they’ve written or singing. The evening is a sampling of all those performances,” Kneale said.

Waters says this year’s targeted goal is to raise $10,000, which is based on last year’s success of $8,500. In 2008, Curvilicious’ first year, approximately $6,000 was raised.

Juliet Burgess, artistic associate of publicity for Urban Curvz, says that Urban Curvz is expecting about 220 people for Curvilicious 2010. Last year about 180 people attended the event.

Curvilicious will be held on March 15 at the Pumphouse Theatre located at 2140 Pumphouse Ave. S.W. Cocktails start at 5:30 p.m. with the performance at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 for students and seniors and $30 for adults. For more information, visit www.urbancurvz.com
