As the sun set over Connaught Park on a warm fall evening, hundreds of men and women gathered as part of Calgary's 28th annual "Take back the Night" rally. The event took place Sept. 23 in southwest Calgary. They gathered to raise awareness about violence against women. The event started with lighting candles. This was followed by speeches and songs from women in the community.

After the speeches, the women and children in the crowd were invited to march the streets chanting, “Women unite, take back the night” and “Two, four, six, eight, no more violence, no more hate.” Men were asked to stay out of the march and instead watch from the sidewalk, because the march is meant to show that women should be able to walk the streets without being escorted. The event concluded with participants asked to come on stage and share their experiences with violence against women. |
