Anxiety and stress levels are running high as local fashion designers scramble to perfect and finalize their collections, as the countdown for the highly anticipated debut of Alberta Fashion Week begins.

During the week of Oct. 4-10, independent designers’ 2010 spring and summer lines will be featured, giving local designers opportunity to be part of a new fashion movement that Calgary and outlying cities have not yet seen.
Alberta Fashion week is expected to be significantly different from Calgary Fashion Week.

“We are marketing and promoting businesses and designers across the province, not just chains that happen to have an address downtown," said David Politi, director of Alberta Fashion Week.

Politi said he wants to help create an environment that allows a business relationship to form between the designer and the buyer, something that Calgary Fashion Week was not able to foster.

All the fashion shows will be held at venues on Calgary’s trendy Stephen Avenue.  The opening show on Oct. 6 will feature past Project Runway Canada contestant, Adejoke Taiwo, and her clothing line, alala. As well, Camille Prins’ clothing line, Dutch Blonde, will be on display.

David Politi is expecting between 2,500 and 4,000 attendees throughout the week from all over Alberta.

Be sure to arrive early and bring cash to the designer and boutique trunk sales, on Oct. 9 and 10, as there is bound to be an abundance of rarities that you won’t be able to find anywhere else. On Oct. 7, a designer mashup show will take place at Seven Resto-Lounge.

This unique show is an experience unlike the standard runway show; the audience is essentially the runway, allowing the models to interact with the audience. Attendees can buy VIP passes which will get you standing-room access to all shows on a first-come first-serve basis. These passes are available for $55, however VIP passes exclude after-parties. Ticket prices to all other shows vary.

After-parties will be in full swing throughout the week, for all you party animals.  Dutch Blonde designer Camille Prins will host the first at Mango Shiva on Oct. 8.

House of Nonie and Sodaliscious will host the second after-party at Belgo on Oct. 9, and Sarah Shell, designer of 442 McAdam, will host the final after-party at Seven Resto-Lounge on October 10.  Tickets are $10.
