High heels and hairy legs were a common site in Olympic Plaza, where the sixth annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event was held, Monday Sept 19. Proceeds went to the Calgary YWCA’s campaign to help women escape domestic violence.

Mount Royal University President David Docherty kicked off the downtown Calgary event with a speech aimed at walkers from all over the city. The rain held out for volunteers and spectators who gawked Calgary men of all shapes and sizes, walking in three-inch stilettos. ”It’s such a great opportunity to witness a first-hand account of what Calgarians can do with their generosity,” said Sue Tomney, CEO of the YWCA of Calgary. As of Tuesday morning, more than $278,000 had been raised for the charity event with more expected to come in the following days.
