The women’ s Mount Royal soccer team started off their season with a bang, with help of second year striker, Brittney Ahearn, resulting in a 4-0 record and the top position of the ACAC South Division with another win last Saturday.

The dominant offensive talent has been a huge element in the success of the Cougars so far this season. Ahearn started the season with four goals in the first game and since then has shown no signs of slowing down offensively.

“You learn the most from bad games, scoring four goals in one game is just too easy,” said the Mount Royal Cougars coach, Ian Fuge, referring to Ahearn’s performance in the season opener against Medicine Hat.

Last season Ahern tied the team record for most goals scored in the regular season with 13 goals. Fuge says this year she will definitely be able to break the record again.

“Brittney is very rare, it’s hard to find soccer players who are hungry to score goals and have the touch and pace to do so,” said Fuge, “and she can use both feet, which believe it or not is quite rare.

Ahearn has been involved with the game of soccer for as long as she can remember. “When I was four my parents put me in soccer and I just kept with it,” said Ahearn, “I really just love the game so much that it inspired me to keep going with it.”

Ahearn has played on a variety of teams since she began with the game and now she is beginning her second season with the Mount Royal Cougars.

“As team mates we always come together as a team to support and help each other,” said Ahearn, “Our team goals are with the new players we picked up, we just want to mesh well and play well together.”

“Mount Royal always come to play and it’s always a hard fought game when we play against them,” said Red Deer College player, Julie Farmer. “They are a tough team to beat, but you learn a lot from playing them.”

“Brittney is really quick and aggressive,” said Farmer, “she always keeps are defense moving creating opportunities for herself or her team mates.”

Ahearn also has some personal goals for herself as well for this upcoming season. “Personally, I want to come to play, do my job as a striker and also help my team out in any way that I can,” said Ahearn. “I want to go to provincials and show are stuff again and hopefully go to Nationals.”

The 5’4 offence talent knows the trip to Nationals will be a long hard road and is completely prepared to make all the sacrifices she needs to get there again.
“Right now we are practicing about five times a week,” said Ahearn, “Ian is always giving me tips of advice to improve my game.”

Practices generally consist of the team meeting up at the field and going through a warm up as a team. Then they move into a variety of drills and finish practice with a scrimmage. The main goal of the practices is to learn from and improve on the mistakes they made as team in the previous game.

So far it looks like all the hard work is paying off for Ahearn and the rest of the Mount Royal squad as they continue to be a dominant force in college soccer.
