Poulin in, Levis out in two separate trades

The Calgary Roughnecks made a move to improve on Wednesday by trading for Mike Poulin, a goaltender from the Boston Blazers. This came after a weekend loss to the Edmonton Rush in which Roughnecks head coach Dave Pym called the goaltending “average.”

The deal allows Poulin to compete with incumbent Matt King and the Roughnecks can go back to the two-goaltender system that was successful in last year’s run to the National Lacrosse League Championship.

"After last week’s game in Edmonton, it was evident that our goaltenders needed to challenge each other,” Brad Banister, president and general manager of the Roughnecks said, calling the goaltending “a little flat” in the recent loss.

“We not only get a great goaltender, we also get a great goaltender with youth behind him,” Banister said.

Poulin, a 6-2, 215-pound native of Kitchener, Ont., is eager to come to Calgary.
“I couldn’t be more excited," Poulin said. "It’s definitely a team I wanted to play for and just really excited it worked out.”

Poulin spent the last two seasons playing for the Blazers, seeing action in two games this year with a 13.54 goals-against average and a .746 save percentage. In exchange for Poulin, the Roughnecks sent Calgary’s first round draft pick in next year’s NLL entry draft to the Blazers.

This will be Poulin’s first chance to play regular minutes after being stuck behind Anthony Cosmo in Boston and Bob Watson before that with the Toronto Rock.

Poulin said the experiences in Boston and Toronto have given him a “great opportunity to play lacrosse where I put my dues in like most goalies in this league put their time in as back-up. That was great for me and now hopefully I’ll see some minutes and give Calgary the chance to win as well.”

Roughnecks coach Pym said he thinks that the new situation is more ideal moving forward.

“I think Matt (King) and Poulin are going to forge a great relationship working together and they are going to feed off of each other,” Pym said.

“Mike is at the stage in his career where he is going to be able to take his game to the next level, which is going to help King with his confidence and get him back playing at the level we expect of him.”

Pym said that King is still his starter but he has no problem putting in Poulin when necessary, and expects Poulin to see some starts down the stretch.
In a separate move, backup goaltender Chris Levis was dealt to the Colorado Mammoth in exchange for their second round draft choice in next year’s NLL entry draft.

Levis saw action in last week’s loss to the Rush, his only action of the year, allowing six goals in 31 minutes of relief action for starting goaltender King. Signed in the off season by the Roughnecks, Levis now returns to Colorado where he played from 2006-2008.

“Chris Levis was put in a difficult spot part way through training camp when Patty Campbell, (last year’s goaltender), decided to pursue his schooling, and I think that Colorado is a better fit for him and I wish him all the best,” Pym said.

The Roughnecks hope to end a three-game losing streak this weekend when their arch-rivals, the Edmonton Rush, come to the Saddledome in the second installment of the NLL's Battle of Alberta.
